The Do’s and Don’ts of Choosing Window Treatments

Many of us hardly give a thought to window treatments. We just hang whatever curtains are available at home. But this shouldn’t be the case.

Window treatments are the accessories of the room design. They can transform the room into an impressive sight and leave the onlookers amazed. However, this is only when you choose the right ones for the style you’re trying to achieve or the room they’re being placed in. 

For example, Roman shades can look great in living rooms, home offices, and bedrooms, but may not look as modern and sleek as when placed in kitchens.

Do: Consider Length Based on Functionality

The length of the window treatment you choose in part comes down to functionality and where the window is located. For example, the kitchen is a high-traffic area where you’ll be cooking, and the floor easily gets dirty, so long curtains are impractical on many levels. Instead, choose a shorter window covering or practical blind that covers the window, but doesn’t pose a fire risk.

Long curtains and draperies are ideal to add a more formal touch to windows and can work well in living rooms or bedrooms where you’d like full window coverage.

Don’t: Style Every Room Differently

When setting up a new home, it’s natural to style each room differently. You may have a lot of different ideas that you want to test, or your teens may want to decorate their bedroom windows according to their style or taste

However, too many differences in style throughout your home can make it look a bit mish-mash. To avoid this happening, try and follow a similar scheme in several rooms. For example, if you have Roman shades in the living room and study, look for its variations and styles for other rooms in your home. You can still have some rooms with blinds and others with curtains, but it will help provide a more balanced, cohesive look.

Do: Layer Using Sheer Curtains

Sheer curtains or draperies are lightweight and cover the window completely. They’re good if you want filtered, soft light, but used on their own, they’re not ideal for privacy.

Instead, if you need more coverage, combine sheer curtains with heavier and darker draperies. This layered setting would give you better control over how much light comes through the window and how much of the interior is visible to outsiders.

Don’t: Ignore Maintenance Costs 

Luxurious, high-end curtains may seem like the perfect fit for your house interior. But don’t forget that the looks need to be maintained. You may have to spend hundreds on professional dry cleaning and care to ensure the curtains stay the way you purchased them.

If that’s something you can’t afford, go with simpler window treatments that you can wash in the machine yourself. 

Do: Test Samples

With so many window treatments available, it can take time to decide the best one for your room layout and furniture. If you find yourself stuck between different options, don’t panic. Ask the store to provide samples or request some from an online shop. They may provide you with small pieces of different fabrics, textures, and colours or give you a catalogue of different window treatment types. Use these resources to compare the options and then select the best one.
