If you’re fed up with the British climate, then tap into your inner Beverley Hills 90210 vibe with the West Coast Cool look. This trend is inspired by the chilled, coastal style of Southern California (SoCal), and uses a neutral colour palette, texture and natural materials to create a calming feel. Relaxed but elegant, this style helps create an atmosphere of sun, sand, beaches and laidback living – just don’t open the window to reveal the UK weather if you don’t want to be disillusioned!
There are components of other styles including a cool colour palette (Scandi), minimalism and boho chic (handmade), but the West Coast Cool trend adds the elements together in a way that’s all its own. Here’s how to create the look.
The California style colour palette
The basic canvas for this look is pale neutral. The aim is to create a light, airy feel so walls need to be shades of white, very pale pink or grey or sand colour. Floors should be pale too – ideally floorboards either made of pale wood or painted in a light, neutral colour. Light coloured carpets will work too.
Making the space work
With those pale walls and light-coloured floors, your room might now be at risk of looking like a boring box! Here’s where you can really get creative. Introduce pops of colour in natural tones – shades of blue for the sky and ocean paired with sand, earth colours and tones of pink. If you’d like something with a bit of punch, use stronger shades such as turquoise.
If you choose plain-coloured accessories, you can go to town with the texture. For example, rugs and throws could be made of really chunky natural yarn, and tables could be raw, unpolished wood. This is a trend where less is more, as you want to see lots of the neutral background to create a feeling of space. Itsy bitsy fussy accessories and ornaments are out, and striking focal points are in.
