The perfect sofa can transform a living room from just another room in the house to an essential and much-loved gathering space in your home. What’s perfect for one home might not work for others though and and everyone has their own design and style tastes. When you find the right style of sofa for you, it can help bring out the most of your home décor.
But why is a simple couch so important? Well, it makes the room more organised and provides structure to it. If the sofa is the first thing placed inside the room, you can base the design of the rest of the room around it. At the same time, it’s an important central point where you can chill or socialise with friends.
So, without further ado, if you’re looking to renew your sofa, here’s a guide to some of this year’s top sofa design trends.
Sculptural shapes
Although simple and straight designs are the most common in a house and can adapt to almost any arrangement in your rooms, sometimes a sofa with sculptural and rounded shapes can be the pièce de resistance in your home. The elegant curves make the couch look more fluid and give off a more relaxed and aesthetic atmosphere.
The good thing about these types of sofas is that you can find them in all shapes and sizes, so you can find your design if you want something extended to fill a bigger room. On the other hand, if you’d rather prefer a small piece of furniture somewhere around the living room where you can chill while scrolling the latest Vogue articles, a sculptural style armchair may fit the bill.
Bold and bright colours
Although minimalism is still a thing in some houses, choosing bolder and brighter colours for your sofas and other furniture pieces will make your home look bright and welcoming, and your personality will show off.
You can’t go wrong with a bold noteworthy colour on your new sofa. Some of the best hues you can try include deep and vibrant shades of blue, bright pink, emerald green and even a darker shade of purple.
Mixed materials
When purchasing a sofa, you might want to ensure what you’re getting is long-lasting and good quality. That’s because these furniture pieces tend to be quite expensive, which makes them a considerable investment. So, you may want to dig in some more and search for something that catches your attention.
For example, look for the material composition to be performance fabric sofa based because it is the most durable, stain-resistant, and natural fibre. Performance fabrics are also easy to clean if you use only water and a sensitive soap, making your life easier in caring for your couches. Other interesting mix and matches include exposed frames and wood and metal. Sometimes, going with what people would least expect from a piece of furniture is the right thing to do.
Sustainable designs
If you’re into fashion and home design, you’re more likely to understand the importance of environmentalism. So, you might want to consider eco-friendly models not made from damaging materials or pieces that can be recycled. It would be easier to search for certified green manufacturing companies that can provide you with only sustainable products. Be wary of greenwashing companies because otherwise, you’ll pay for a product that is nothing like you wanted it to be. IKEA, for example, was flagged for making bench wood chairs from wood that has been illegally procured from the forests of Ukraine.
If you’re directly looking at materials, here are some examples of sustainable textiles for your sofa:
- Organic fabrics, such as cotton, wool and silk
- Bamboo
- Sustainable wood
- Cork
- Stone
Try to avoid plastics, finished wood and treated fabrics as they don’t only damage the environment but are also not sustainable in the long run, and the chemical protectants from these materials can damage your health.
Modular designs
If you’re the type of person who likes to change their home décor often, you might want to opt for a modular design as it allows you to be more flexible regarding significant changes. At the same time, modular sofas can be separated and rearranged, whatever you like, when you feel like doing so. Try to look for the best fittest sofa that can adapt to any of your future plans.
Some benefits of choosing a modular sofa are they’re highly customisable, may have built-in USB chargers and are expandable. They can also be very comfortable and are good value, which means you’ll make a good investment. However, most of the time, the colour pattern can be limited, and the pieces might be challenging to assemble, so you need to be prepared with a lot of space to arrange them correctly.
More functionality
Of course, sofas are not made only to be admired in your living room. Given the modernism of today’s furniture, everything we have around us must have some amount of functionality included in its design. Luckily, functional sofas are a thing, and they’re not less offering or beautiful than usual ones. Some sofa designs can:
- Turn into a bunk bed for two
- Turn into an ottoman, a coffee table and two extra pull-out seats
- Unzip into two armchairs or a bed
- Provide electric adjustability and other similar functions
A multi-functional couch is ideal for spare room, if your space is limited and you haven’t got room for several pieces of furniture, or if you are on a budget but need maximum functionality.
Bottom line
A sofa can bring the most out of your living room or bedroom. Not only can it elevate the look of your house, but it can also provide functionality and service to your and your family. So, are you ready to change the look of your house with a new couch?

Light colors, as in the first photo, are not very practical. It’s easy to get dirty, especially if you like to eat chips while sitting on the couch in front of the TV 🙂 Although, of course, such a light sofa looks more elegant.
