Ah, autumn. It’s one of our favourite times of year here at Fresh Design – golden leaves, just a slight hint of chill in the air, comfort food, hot chocolate and long walks. Each year we put away our summer clothes when it gets to a certain time, so why not give your home a mini autumn style makeover, as well? Adding a few autumn style touches here and there will bring you seamlessly through the season into winter.
1. Throws and cushions
It’s just a little chilly at nights at the moment, and probably not quite worth having the central heating on yet, so a throw or two on the bed or sofa make the ideal short term solution. The ideal choice for adding instant cosiness and autumn style is through using natural fibres such as wool, or alternatively fake fur has a top snuggle factor.
The nice thing about cushions in particular is that you can just swap the covers with your more summery ones rather than replacing the entire thing, and put the other covers away.

Of pure new wool, this throw (at the front in above photo) is a timeless light grey colour, woven with a large herringbone pattern and off white fringe. It’s also available in other colours, £69 and available from Tolly McRae.
2. Candles
There’s something about candles that always make us feel warmer and cosier, whether it’s something do with the light or the ambiance. Change from fresh, summery scents such as citruses and florals to warmer scents such as spice and pine for the perfect autumn style addition.
Small jar candles, Prices
These small jar candles are a great way to try out lots of fragrances in different rooms, and they add a pop of colour as well. They cost £5.25 each from Prices, and are available in a range of autumnal scents including amber, cinnamon and oak.

3. Autumn foliage
While of course you can still buy fresh flowers in the autumn, they’re likely to be imported and expensive. Your garden may still be yielding late summer foliage such as hydrangeas, otherwise make the most of autumn’s natural firework show by using foliage in vases. Hawthorn berries, rose hips and evergreens such as rosemary and holly combine for a stunning autumn style foliage arrangement.

4. Lighting
As the nights draw in, it might be time to think about a little extra light. Table lamps create a cosy glow, great for dark corners.

5. Cosy up
If you want to make the most of your home’s stored heat without turning the heating on, then draught excluders by your external doors are a must.
