Each year, various organisations pick out their predicted Colour of the Year. Dulux has just announced theirs as the gorgeous Denim Drift – a lovely blue-grey colour.
It’s a shade that will work in a variety of decor schemes, from kitchens and living rooms, to kids rooms and studies.
In addition, Dulux have developed a beautiful tonal colour palette specifically to complement the Colour of the Year, featuring a spectrum of blues and complimentary blue-hued tones:
The colours complement each other so well and there are shades of blue included that are soft and soothing, as well as more dramatic and moody – something for everyone.
We particularly love how they’ve been used in this kid’s bedroom with a complementary colour palette of tonal blues – what a cosy nook that looks!
Here’s what Marianne Shillingford, Creative Director at Dulux and design trend expert, has to say about using the colour ideas in your decor projects. “Creating a blue colour scheme is successful when you choose shades that work beautifully together. This year the Colour of the Year, Denim Drift, has been teamed with a palette of blues which give you the confidence to get it right every time. There are ten blues within the palette, five of them, including Denim Drift, are muted and atmospheric and the remaining five are cleaner, brighter hues that pack more of a punch.
The whole collection has been designed to be used in combination across different elements of an interior from the walls to the furniture, furnishings and accessories. You can turn the visual impact up with the brighter blues and down with the muted blues to suit the style and personality of a room and can be sure that none of them will ever look out of place.”
What colours go with Denim Drift?
If you don’t want to paint all your interior walls in the Dulux Denim Drift paint colour, there are plenty of options for colours that go well with it. Denim Drift has lovely warming blue undertones so it automatically pairs well with tonal combinations of paints. For example, the colours Breton Blue and First Dawn are two blue shades that complement Denim Drift. Breton Blue is darker and can help add a sense of drama to a room, whereas First Dawn is a lighter shade of blue and perfect for adding a more airy feel to your interior decor.
Blue is often paired with white for a classic blue and white colour scheme and you can effectively use Denim Drift in this way. Bright white provides a stark contrast against Denim Drift and will help lift the decor – use on skirting boards, ceilings or doors. For a truly versatile colour choice, opt for an off-white, as a defining hue as it’s on the same colour spectrum as Denim Drift. Other neutral colours like cream are worth consideration too, as the colour combinations add a warmer feel to a room. On a practical point of view, it can be a more forgiving colour than white and helps reduce the chance of stubborn marks, scratches or dents from showing up quite so brightly.
Opposite blue on the colour wheel you’ll find orange and this classic contrasting colour choice can work well with Denim Drift for a modern, warming decor scheme. The Dulux colour Moroccan Flame is a punchy, warming orange that adds a touch of vigour into a room. It’s a perfect fit alongside Denim Drift. If red is more your colour, the rich spicy tones of Tin Red work well too.
For a less orangey colour, the warming neutral tones of Apricot Crush can be used to add some paler touches of contrasting colour to a room.
Whatever your colour selection choice, Denim Drift is firmly on the interiors and fashion trend agenda and is part of a blue set of shades that add personal life, different textures and interest into home interiors. If you’re looking for a room colour change, we’d recommend getting a tester pot of this gorgeous shade and seeing if it works for you.
Do you think you’ll be incorporating Denim Drift or any of the other similar colours of blue hues into your decorating projects in the coming year? Let us know in the comments below.

I really like it as a fresh contrast next to the older, darker furniture in the last pic. I think it will be a popular colour. More so than Cherished Gold!

I must admit I was hoping for a green, but I do like this colour and the more I look at it and see it, the more I like it.

I really like this colour choice and I think it’s one that will have a very wide appeal and that people won’t be scared to use in their homes in a big way. I love the palette of other blue shades it can be teamed with, especially the darker blues. Not bad Dulux.

I like this shade of blue, I’m usually not very daring with colour so can totally get on board with this more muted grey-ey blue! x

A great shade definitely getting the paint brush out! Love it against the white and simple washed wood finishes 🙂

In my home, I love bright whites, nudes and yellows. It’s bizarre. But trying to find homeware pieces that make my home look lived in is sometimes difficult. Thankfully I’ve found this amazing luxury homeware site that sells everything I could ever want. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for gorgeous statement homeware pieces.
