The kitchen is the heart of the home—bringing family and friends together, enjoying those sumptuous meals. But balancing those comforts with a style that defies trends and remains timeless can be a bit tricky. While trends come and go, there are a few recent ones that may be here to stay.
From how to make better use of the space in your kitchen, to stepping up your sustainability game on your road to your dream kitchen, we talk about all the 2024 kitchen trends you need to know about. These tips will have you covered from floor to ceiling — literally!
Farmhouse Sinks
Farmhouse sinks were one of the biggest kitchen trends of 2023 and this continues into 2024. Their popularity actually started back in the 17th century, but the contemporary styles of the 20th century saw them shunned for those stainless steel sinks-and-a-half. However, the modern family needs more room, and that includes the sink! This style has come back with a bang, making them one of the hottest kitchen trends of the year, and are likely here to stay (potentially for another century)!
Farmhouse sinks are those deep, often long sinks you see in more rustic-styled homes. They’re called farmhouse sinks as they were often used in farm houses as they can fit big buckets and endless amounts of pots, pans and other dishes. Today, they’re highly useful for our love of oversized reusable bottles, and are popping up in kitchens of all styles, making them a versatile and beautiful sink choice.
Sustainable Materials
Sustainable materials are a trend in all areas of design in 2024, including in the kitchen. Think bamboo, reclaimed wood and other natural, quick-regrowing materials. And just to throw a related curve-ball, steel is highly abundant and 100% recyclable, so is a great option for benchtops, cabinets and even trimming around the kitchen. It’s easy to clean and looks great in a more contemporary kitchen.
But steel isn’t the be-all-or-end-all of sustainable kitchen materials in 2024. Like we mentioned, bamboo and reclaimed wood are popular sustainable materials to use in your kitchen. Reclaimed wood and bamboo benchtops and cabinets are all the rage, and can easily be painted to match your decor too. There truly are sustainable kitchen materials to suit every home and budget, making them a trend we don’t see going anywhere anytime soon.
Multifunctional Kitchen Islands
Gone are the days of your kitchen island only serving as the food prep space! With the rise in working from home and smaller living spaces, a big kitchen trend in 2024 is the multifunctional kitchen island, making it something the whole family can use.
When designing a multifunctional kitchen island, consider what else would be handy for that space. Do you often have the kids close by with homework? Would it be convenient to set up some power and data points for working from home? What storage would be useful? Could adding a bench seat to the back of your island provide some much-needed space for entertaining?
Once you’ve worked out what you need some extra space for, consider your accessories too. Could you use bar stools or do you need some more supportive chairs for working? The options are endless when it comes to what you can do these days, if you have the imagination for it!
Bold Colours
Maybe it’s following all the time spent indoors over the past few years, but bold colours in the kitchen are back and trending in 2024. From unique tile designs and bold glass backsplashes to cabinets, fridges and even wall colours, there are so many ways colours are being designed into kitchens to add a little personality.
Adding some striking colours to your kitchen doesn’t have to be a big statement. You could look at some new artwork, use some bold-coloured pots or knives, or simply by throwing down a colourful runner on the floor. Changing up your kitchen doesn’t have to mean a full renovation. It can be as affordable and simple as you like.
If you’d love to use a bold colour but are not sure about which to choose, think about the other colours you love in your life. Are there a pair of shoes you always turn to or even a beautifully coloured reusable cup you take with you everywhere? Show that to your designer, paint store or kitchen reno expert and see what they come up with!
What we’ve found is all these kitchen trends for 2023 are about adding personality into your space. We spend so much time in our kitchens, so why not have a little fun with it? It’s a place meant to be enjoyed, so enjoy it!
