[AD] Soft, smooth and durable silk is hypoallergenic and breathable making it a popular choice for bedding. Jasmine Silk has been specialising in this luxury fabric since 1982 and has become a well-respected name in the industry. The parent company is based in the Hangzhou region of China, on the Yangtze River delta. As well as being one of the most beautiful parts of China with stunning scenery and ancient buildings, it is also where the best silkworms are found.
Jasmine Silk have been working on the design of their best-selling pillowcase for over 10 years, so we were delighted to be asked to put it through its paces. Our reviewer was Sara Walker.

“There’s just something about silk bedding. It screams luxury and decadence – or, because screaming is vulgar, it whispers it very gently. I can almost guarantee that within seconds of putting this pillowcase on your bed you’ll be lining up a DVD of ‘Casablanca’, slipping on your maribou-trimmed slippers and wondering where you’ve put the cocktail shaker.

“Jasmine Silk use the highest grade (6A) long fibre mulberry silk to produce their pillowcases. The one I tried was the Housewife Silk Pillowcase, £23, which has a momme count of 19. Momme, as I’ve just discovered, is a weight measurement in silk fabric, similar to thread count used to rate cotton sheets. The higher the momme count, the heavier, denser and better quality the fabric. According to the company, benefits of silk include the hypoallergenic quality; the moisture repellent qualities and the fact that it’s a natural material.
“The moisture repellent quality of the fabric apparently means that it doesn’t drain humidity from hair and skin. So you wake up with smoother skin and less ‘bed head’ – who wouldn’t want that? I don’t have any allergies to household dust or anything like that, so I wasn’t expecting to see any difference there.

“I tried the pillowcase out for a fortnight, washing it twice in that time, and I was surprised at some of the results!
“Although I don’t have any allergies, I did wake up with less of a ‘stuffy feeling’ than usual. Also, my hair was much neater that it normally is first thing! The weather was still on the chilly side when I tried out the product, and I did find the silk a bit cold on initial contact, but it would be bliss in summer. I was using silk pillowcases and cotton sheets and duvet cover.
The silk needs to be washed at 30 degrees C and I was washing everything else at 40 degrees C, so it meant running two loads – I can see the only possible solution to that one is to invest in more silk bedding!! Although silk bedding is obviously not the cheapest option out there, it does feel extremely luxurious and I’m a convert to the benefits.”
