When you move into your student accommodation, one of your top priorities should be making your room your own. That means getting a bit creative and putting your personal stamp on the room.
Here are some of our top tips on how to do just that – you’ll feel at home in no time!
1. Use lighting to set the mood
One of the most important ways to make yourself feel at home in any setting is to think about how the space is lit.
The staple lighting accessory for many student rooms is the almost obligatory string of fairy lights. They are super popular for a reason: they make your room feel like a snug den.
They can be draped just about anywhere in the room, whether it be on your headboard, around window frames, or around pics of family and friends on your noticeboards.
They add ambience and make your room super-Insta worthy.
If fairy lights aren’t for you, then other stylish options include cute lightboxes to classy bedside lamps. You can find a bold statement piece like a Moroccan-inspired lamp to add warmth and cosiness to your room.
2. Unleash your arty side
Your student bedroom is the ideal place for you to express yourself and get creative.
Of course, your accommodation will set rules about how you can decorate your student room, but you’d be surprised how much you can achieve within those parameters.
Hanging up art pieces and photo frames with pics of friends and family is a great way to really make you feel settled in and supported. You could even create a collage of memories or motivational quotes to inspire you when you’re slogging through a revision session. Use custom mugs printing service to put a motivational quote on a mug from which you drink your coffee every morning.
Or get inspired by local art and culture in your student city – for example, some of the best student accommodation in Belfast is surrounded by impressive and thought-provoking wall art inspired by the region’s history. Such evocative pieces could serve to get your creative juices flowing.
If your room is on the smaller side, maximise the space you do have by getting a mirror. This simple decorative touch can help illuminate the room as it reflects light and gives the illusion of the room being more spacious.
There are lots of stylish freestanding mirrors which are ideal for pre-lecture OOTD selfies, or you can get a hanging wall mirror – just be careful with hanging things up on your walls.
Knocking nails into the walls probably isn’t permitted by your student accommodation provider, but there are alternatives to pins, sellotape and Blu tack – try using Command Picture Hanging Strips to hang things up without damaging the walls.
Washi Tape is another incredible resource that can be used to make wall art in your student room. Washi Tape is Japanese masking tape that is completely removable and reusable, and best of all, it doesn’t leave a mark. You can use it to make photo frames or practise arts and crafts.
They look super stylish and won’t put your accommodation deposit at risk!
3. Get organised!
To keep your room clutter free and make sure you feel at home, you need to stay organised.
Putting any clutter into storage boxes and dirty laundry into laundry baskets is essential.
We also recommend putting up a cork noticeboard to organise your timetable, social calendar, and add in a few decorative touches like photos of loved ones, freshers wristbands, or holiday postcards.
Your desk should be dedicated as a work space in your university room, so maybe get a desk organiser to keep your stationery in one place. You should try to avoid blurring the boundary between desk space and rest space. Your bed should be where you chill out and sleep – try not to work from bed, as tempting as it is.
If you keep that boundary in place, you’ll probably find that you sleep better at night.
4. Add a splash of colour
Another ingenious way to decorate your uni room without losing your deposit is by hanging up a wall tapestry. Wall hangings can really soften your space and add colour to your room.
There are an infinite number of designs and patterns, so you can find something that’s to your taste and that fits in with the overall colour scheme of your room.
Don’t worry about how to hang them up – they can be hung up with Command Hanging Strips in the same way that photo frames are.
Colourful splashes can be introduced into your student room via cute cushions and bedding. You could invest in some slogan cushions to add a dash of humour or inspiration, or get themed bedding from your favourite film franchise or football team.
Adding a throw can add a touch of class and extra warmth in the chilly winter months!
You don’t have to break the bank, either. Many bedding sets can be found in cheap and cheerful places like Wilkos or Primark, and they can look surprisingly fancy!
5. Get some greenery in
One great way to introduce some life and vibrancy into student rooms is by adding a plant or two!
Not only do they prettify a room, did you know that there are actually health benefits to putting plants in your living environment?! They make the air cleaner, which can only be a good thing, they have a relaxing effect and can reduce anxiety and stress. And studies show that the presence of plants can even make you more focused and help you to study better (seriously!)
Plants are living beings and that means they require care and attention. Let’s be honest, that’s not such an easy task for some of us! If you’re looking for a low-maintenance plant, check out aloe vera, spider plant, jade plants and rubber trees – they’re all really easy to care for.
For all the luscious vibrancy with zero effort, fake plants are the way forward.
So there you have five simple tips for decorating your student room. Hopefully you’re now ready to get inspired, get decorating, and enjoy your space!
