It seems like a long time since we’ve been able to hold a get together in the winter! This year, why not welcome the winter in in style by inviting a small party of friends over for Halloween? Themed parties aren’t just for children – although there is always the option to play suitably spooky party games if you like! Halloween isn’t the time to do ‘subtle and sophisticated’, so break out the pumpkin-themed glasses and ask everyone to dress up to add to the fun. Here’s how to throw the perfect Halloween party for adults.
Invite with style
We’ve all become used to doing everything virtually – but Halloween is a great excuse to send out proper ‘snail invites’. You can track down some spooky options on Etsy, or make your own if you have time. Just remember to send them out in plenty of time!
Line up the cocktails
Let’s face it, it wouldn’t be Halloween without something brightly coloured in a glass! You can go as wild and wacky (or sensible) as you like with these. Keep it simple with a mixture of cranberry juice and vodka, or go to town with champagne and fresh raspberry puree. Remember to provide alcohol-free options for drivers or those who’d rather not drink. You can also buy ice cubes in the shape of eyeballs, skulls and spiders, which are perfect for garnishing. They’re made of acrylic, so you just pre-freeze them and drop them into the glass – they won’t dilute the drink, either.
Get your game on
If you’re in the market for something a bit silly then some games will get everyone in the party mood. The traditional Halloween game is apple bobbing, which can have hilarious results and is much harder than it looks! If you don’t fancy a bucket of water in the house, then how about a murder mystery? You can either buy a pre-made set or write your own. Another option is a special edition Halloween charades – it’s classic charades, but you’re only allowed to use spooky films and books such as A Nightmare on Elm Street or The Silence of the Lambs.
Decorate
This is the best bit! You can either go old-school with real hollowed-out pumpkins, or use strings of pumpkin lights and lanterns with LED lights. There’s no such thing as ‘over the top’ when it comes to Halloween!

Food for thought
On to the menu! When you’ve gone to so much trouble, it seems a shame not to theme the menu as well. If you’ve gone for real pumpkins then you’ll have a lot of leftovers on hand – turn them into soup, or add blue or feta cheese and turn them into little pies. Another visually appealing idea is to cut little Jack-O-Lantern faces into red and orange peppers, stuff them with couscous or minced beef, pop the ‘lid’ back on and bake them in the oven. For pudding, it has to be red velvet cake – complete with cream cheese frosting and ‘claw slashes’ of strawberry jam!
