Buying a fixer-upper is a good way to save money and if you’re an optimistic person, you can see it as a blank canvas. It’s up to you to turn this old house into something amazing, and you can do it in whatever way you like. When you’re done, it will truly feel like your home because every room will have your unique stamp on it.
However, a lot of people arrive at their new home and feel overwhelmed because they haven’t got a clue where to start. In a fixer-upper where a lot of the rooms are unliveable, you need to do things in the right order so you can be as comfortable as possible while the rest of the remodel gets underway. So, which rooms should you do first?
Bathrooms and Kitchen
If the house is in a bad state, you need to get all of the most important facilities sorted as soon as possible. You can deal with a bedroom that is basic and needs a new coat of paint, but you can’t live without a working bathroom. So, as soon as you get the keys, get the renovations underway so you can get your bathroom sorted right away. It shouldn’t take too long to get a small bathroom sorted, and it will make life so much easier for you. If you have more than one bathroom, you can leave the second one until later if you like, but you definitely need one.
Where the kitchen is concerned, you might not be able to get the whole thing finished right away, but you need it to be comfortable. Even if you don’t get all of the units in, you still need a working refrigerator, cooker and some counter space so you can cook basic meals. Unless you want to be living off microwave meals and takeout for the entire time, you need to prioritize this.
Bedrooms and Living Areas
Next, it’s best to move onto the bedroom and living areas. The order you do this in all depends on what your priorities are. If you have a big family and you want a space where you can all spend time together, you might decide that at least one of the living areas should be finished first. However, you might decide that designing your bedrooms is more important.
Prioritizing The Rest of The House
Once you have a functioning kitchen and bathroom, somewhere to sleep, and a living space, you can do the rest of the house in whatever order you like. You need to think about what your priorities are and which areas of the house you need the most. For example, if you work from home, setting up a home office is a priority. Otherwise, the spare room can probably be left until near the end because you won’t use it that much.
If you renovate your fixer-upper in the wrong order, you could make things a lot more difficult for yourself, so it’s definitely worth planning your route to completion. Consider using high-quality wood refinishing products from Priory Polishes to add a polished and professional finish to your furniture and wood surfaces throughout the house.

Such great advice, I think after working on bathrooms and kitchens it’s great to start at the top of the house and work down too.
