Black may not seem an obvious colour choice for kitchens, but the smartest interiors this year are going monochrome. You don’t have to go full-on Addams family, though – using careful accessories will give a sharp, modern effect and create a stunning black kitchen.
For a quick makeover, try painting wooden kitchen cabinet doors in chalky charcoal and matching it with crisp white tiles and walls. Or reverse it, and team rows of black wall tiles with white cabinets. There are lots of black kitchen accessories around this year from glossy kettles and food processors to sleek taps, so you can dip a toe into the trend on any level you like.
We’ve picked out some of our black kitchen favourites, which would also work well as an accent to set off other strong colours such as red or deep blue.
Black glass splashback, My Colour Glass
This toughened glass black kitchen splashback is a stylish way to give a kitchen a facelift, and it’s easy to take care of as it’s non-porous and has no grout lines for dirt to lodge in. It’s tough and heat resistant, making it a practical choice as well. Prices start at £49.95 per square metre from My Colour Glass.
Black and copper toaster, Von Shef
Incorporating two of this season’s hottest trends, black and copper, this neat two-slice toaster has a matt finish and will look stylish on your worktop. It has a variable browning dial and wide slots for toast, crumpets and more. £17.99, available from Von Shef.
Set of two mugs in black and gold from the Edited collection, La Cafetiere
These mugs are both sophisticated and modern, featuring a matt black ceramic exterior and a double walled construction to keep drinks hotter for longer. The gold interior adds a touch of luxury to your morning coffee, and gives a nod to the current trend for metallics. £15 for a set of two, available from Farrar & Tanner.
Black oven gloves, The Organic Company
These oven gloves by The Organic Company are as well designed as they are useful. They’re practical as well, as they won’t show any spills or burns so will look good for longer. They’re made from 100% GOTS certifed organic cotton with a pique weave and cost £32 from the Find Store.
Tinkisso contemporary kitchen tap in black, Dowsing & Reynolds
This black kitchen tap has elegant swan-neck shape and will prove a focal point in your kitchen. It has a precision mixing control which gives the perfect flow and is great for one sink, or between two sinks where the spout can swivel easily between the two.
