Here at Fresh Design Blog we’re on a mission to clear clutter and get more organised. Modern homes often have a lack of built-in storage solutions, so it’s even more important to tackle it yourself, whether through investing in clever storage ideas or getting crafty with devising your own.
If you’re keen to get your bedroom more organised, then here are our top tips for effective bedroom storage solutions.
Organise cupboards and drawers
Make the storage space you do have work even better for you by using organiser inserts in drawers and boxes and baskets in cupboards. As well as helping to divide the space up, they can also help things become a bit more organised inside your drawers and cupboards, helping the space look less cluttered and enable you to find things more easily.
Buy a storage bed
When you’re short on space and want storage options that effectively hide your clutter, a bed with built in storage is perfect. There are lots of different options available, from beds with drawers that pull out from the base, to beds where the mattress lifts up to reveal heaps of storage underneath.
Storage beds are great for storing bigger and bulkier items, like spare pillows, bedding, thick jumpers or towels that you don’t want all the time, but do need to keep accessible.
Have a clutter basket
It’s so easy for small items and bits and pieces – jewellery, headphones, loose change etc – to start gathering on windowsills, bedside tables or on the top of chests of drawers. Instead of having a mish mash of clutter around, get yourself a dedicated clutter basket and use it to store it all in. You’ll know where it is and it’s better to have it all in one place than scattered around.
Find a headboard with storage
If you’re short on space and need to make the most of every inch you’ve got, then look out for headboards that have got built in storage potential. Some, for example, are designed so that they’ve got a bit of shelving above them or incorporate space behind which can utilise for hidden storage purposes.
Of course, if you’re a tab hand at DIY you could make your own customised storage headboard to suit your exact requirements, like this stylishly assembled one with shelves and cupboards.
Get crafty with a pegboard
Pegboards can be surprisingly useful for storage in a bedroom, helping you get items off the floor or off dressing tables and onto their own unique display. The pegs can be used to hang wearable items, such as hats, scarves and belts, or for hanging accessories such as bags, umbrellas or necklaces.
You can incorporate little shelves onto the board for non-hangable items and design it in the style you want.
Add radiator storage
If you have a radiator in your bedroom, consider buying a radiator cover with built-in storage. It will hide an ugly radiator whilst still providing you with heat, plus help you make more use of the space.
Look for simple pieces such as radiator shelves which go above the radiator, or more elaborate designs with shelves built in to the side of the cover. Or get someone to make a cover to suit your individual requirements.
Have cupboards built in
If you’ve got an awkwardly shaped room, or sloping ceilings, and find it difficult to put standard sized furniture in, why not consider having cupboards specially built in? Many companies offer such a service and can help you plan out and adapt the space to maximise all your storage needs.

All fab suggestions Rachel. I use boxes in drawers I must admit and now I’m wishing I had a bed with storage. So much wasted space under the mattress!
I am so glad that someone else uses boxes in their drawers! However, yours are much more attractive than my empty ice cream tubs. I dealt with a company called Sharps ( http://www.sharps.co.uk ) for fitted wardrobes and a nifty window-seat with draws, and I agree it has really maximised our storage and the bedroom looks so much better now there is no clutter. Fingers crossed for the bed to go with them!
Great ideas here and what a fantastic competition prize!
Wow I would love one of these beds! We have so much bedding in our cupboards and it takes up so much space, something with under bed storage would be the perfect solution.
I absolutely love the storage bed ide! Wonder how comfy they are, though?
These are great ideas. I really want an ottoman bed so I’m definitely entering this giveaway
I honestly couldn’t cope without my bed storage space bed now, especially being the hoarder I am. Loving that head board idea, how cool!
I know the feeling, having hidden storage in the bed is invaluable.
