Creating a clutter free home needn’t cost a lot of money – there are plenty of ways you can minimise the amount of unnecessary items in your living space on a budget and here are just a few ways:
Make a fresh start
The best way to create a clutter free home is to – you’ve guessed it – remove the clutter. This is, of course, a free solution and you should start by being brutal and going through your worldly possessions, taking away anything you haven’t touched for over a year or that you know won’t be used again.
This is not only a great activity for clearing your head and feeling like you are making some big changes in your life but it will also free up lots of space.
If you can’t bear to part with certain items then look into outside storage solutions; you can find storage units located up and down the country from Edinburgh to Bournemouth, where you can lock your items away and pay a monthly fee for. Most storage suppliers offer discounts on the first month and the price varies depending on the amount of space required.
Have ample storage
Storage space is so important when minimising clutter and while it might be tempting to simply chuck any items you don’t have a home for in the first drawer you come across, there needs to be a system.
Drawer dividers are a great idea and help you keep everything separate (make your own on the cheap with this tutorial), in the kitchen.
It’s also worth adopting the matching container tactic in the cupboards – dispensing food like cereal into air tight containers that can be easily accessed and hold much more.
Use a ‘catch all’ bowl
Many of us might discover that by the end of the day our personal items are scattered around the house and we’re not entirely sure where all this clutter and mess came from.
Simply place a catch all bowl or basket in each room and before you go to bed try and find a home for each item in there – no more clutter and no more screaming about not being able to find your keys in the morning again.
Magnetic attraction
Magnetic strips are easy to stick on the wall and keep metal items neat, readily accessible but also out of the way. Consider using them to house your beauty tools or stick small magnets on to the bottom of make up pots and use it to house them too. Here’s a great tutorial on how to create a magnetic board for your make up items but you could also use it for your stationery if you draw or craft.
When it comes to creating a clutter free home it’s all about finding ways of staying on top of what we bring in the house. Some people have a rule where if they buy something new, something old has to go. This is a great way of always revamping either your wardrobe or your home décor and ensuring you are never reaching the limitations for your space.
Being clutter free costs very little, it’s simply about being careful with what you buy, finding a home for what you have and being a little savvy when it comes to storage. Good luck!

Great ideas and thanks for the tips Rachel. x
The best idea ever: remove the clutter. You just nailed it. Good tips, hope it will work for me too.
Totally agree with your tips. Always start with cleaning and decluttering. Then you will have enough room to use all the space savers and storage solutions you want. You can use the occasion to give away unnecessary items to charity and start living a frugal life with fewer possessions. Especially when we talk about kitchens. We tend to buy all kinds of kitchen gadgets without even having the space to store them.
But yes, cleaning and decluttering always come first.
I use ‘catch all’ bowl at home. It is one of the best ideas to cope with scattered around personal items, change money and what not…
