We all have our own traditions at Christmas – who we spend it with, what we do or how we decorate our homes. This year, why not add a new element to your seasonal decor by hanging a Swedish star in your window.
In Sweden, star decorations are a key part of Christmas traditions and can be seen hanging in the windows of many homes. Originally stars were used to symbolise the guiding star from the nativity story, but they’ve evolved to become a popular decoration in their own right.
When you see the range of stars available, you’ll see why they’re so popular – the designs, styles and colours are attractive and eye-catching and when they’re lit up at night, they’re even more impressive.
Sweden-based web store, Jackie K, sells an authentic range of Christmas star lights of all shapes and sizes and they ship to the UK (it takes four to five days for delivery, although delivery times may vary in December).
We love the look of these colourful ones which are bright and cheery for a contemporary home.
The classic white stars are gorgeous too and typically Scandi in style, like theĀ slim white Aino Christmas star, which has a tiny pattern of small holes all over it.
We put the Aino star to the test. It arrived flat packed with instructions on how to put it together, along with a special light fixture and plug. As it comes direct from Sweden, the plug is a standard two pin European style, so you’ll need to add an adapter to be able to plug it in. If you’ve got a travel adapter to hand that will work fine. You’ll also need to add a suitable bulb.
It was a little bit of a fiddle to get the star put together, with the bulb in place. Being of a delicate material, it’s not something you can rush, but the end result is definitely worth the time and effort.
The star is somewhat bigger than we’d expected, so it really fills a window when it’s hung up and you really need a big window to do it justice.
It looks great displayed in a room too – propped up by a fireplace or hung above a Christmas tree. In fact, if you don’t have a suitable sized window to hang it in, there are plenty of other ways to use it as part of your Christmas decor.
When the Christmas season is over, we assume the star will revert back to being folded up and flat packed, so it can be safely kept for use next year.
(Disclosure: Jackie K kindly sent us a star for review, but all views and opinions are our own).
