The secrets of a timelessly beautiful interior design scheme

Published October 8, 2015 · Updated January 9, 2017 · By Rachel Leave a Comment

What are the secrets of timelessly beautiful interior design schemes that don’t date? You know, those rooms that look perfect, work with ease and seem to have a contemporary yet timeless style that doesn’t date. Carpetright asked us recently, as part of their Beautiful Home, Beautiful Life campaign, so here are some of our top tips.

1. Simple elegance

One of the key characteristics of timeless interior design schemes are elegance and simplicity. If you think about rooms that appear timeless, they’re fully functional for your individual or family needs, but also are very well balanced, clean and simple. They work effectively now but, will still look good in a year or so too.

2. Proportion

Rooms with a timeless appeal are designed with normally cleverly designed with proportion in mind. The furniture is in proportion with the size of the room so that it looks easy on the eye and as if it’s ‘meant to be’. That means no sofas that are too huge for a small room, or baths that look tiny in a spacious bathroom.

3. Clean, flowing lines

A timeless design can be helped by the furniture, soft furnishings and accessories having clean lines. They’re chosen to work together so that the flow of them helps complete the room.

4. Colour

In terms of colours, neutral colour schemes tend not to date as much as using the latest, faddy trend. A neutral colour palette needn’t be boring though – you can add shade and depth, light and freshness through using complementary hues. Bright colours are certainly a good option too, use one or two colours that you love in moderation.

5. Natural materials

Natural materials work well in many timeless designs. Think stone, wood or exposed brick. The same goes for soft furnishings and fabrics, or flooring such as pure wool carpets or rugs. If yo u’re adding natural materials, look for options that are durable and long-lasting, but also have a luxurious feel to it.

6. Clutter-free

A timelessly beautiful room that’s easy on the eye and functional to use is normally clutter free. But this doesn’t mean there’s no clutter or practical use of the space going on. Storage options will be carefully incorporated into the design of the room – concealed shelving, boxes with lids, window seats that double up as toy boxes or TVs that are hidden behind shelves.

If you’re interested in exploring timelessly beautiful flooring options, then you’ll love the new House Beautiful range at Carpetright. They’ve worked together to produce a collection of stylish flooring ideas for every room of your home.

The collection includes carpets, rugs, vinyl, laminate and engineered wood flooring, so there’s an option available to suit everyone.

We’re especially impressed with the vinyl collection, which includes plenty of stylish and highly durable flooring ideas, including plenty of textured effects which look and feel more expensive than they actually are.

To celebrate the launch of the new House Beautiful range – for which we’re acting as an advocate – Carpetright are giving you the opportunity to win £500 to spend on a new bed. Head over to Carpetright now to enter.
