Yoga is deservedly a very popular form of exercise. The benefits are multiple – it increases flexibility, strength and muscle tone, helps prevent injury, improves cardio health and helps lower stress levels. It’s also a low cost option to practice at home, as you need very little in the way of equipment. To put you into the right mindset, though, it’s important to have the right area to practice in. Trying to achieve downward facing dog while surrounded by actual dog toys is probably enough to throw you off your stride! Here’s how to create the perfect yoga sanctuary in your home.
Find the right space
This can be anywhere you like, upstairs or down – you just need a small area that’s still large enough to allow you to move around and is tidy and uncluttered. Upstairs may be a better choice, as it’s generally less open to distractions such as someone seeing you through the window and deciding to pop in for a coffee! The ideal solution would be a small spare bedroom or office where you can shut the door and be undisturbed. If that’s not an option, you could consider a room divider or screen to give you some privacy.
The ideal area has lots of natural light, so near a window or skylight if possible. The right flooring surface is important, too – for safety rather than aesthetic reasons! The ideal surface is smooth and flat but non-slip. Try to avoid tiled floors or anything shiny such as lino. Carpet isn’t ideal, either, as it can be a bit too grippy! At the end of the day, though, you’ll have to work with what you have available. If you have less-than-ideal flooring, it’s worth investing in a good quality yoga mat.
Dress your space
Atmosphere is as important as practicality. Your space should make you feel calm and comfortable, so avoid harsh lighting. If you have room, introduce some houseplants. If your space is a little dark, add a lamp or some LED candles (safer than the real thing while you’re concentrating on something else!). Another really useful addition is a large mirror. While you’re practising yoga in a class you have someone on hand to correct mistakes. If you’re on your own at home, it can be much harder to spot and fix and issues. Try mirror tiles on one of the walls, or if that’s not practicable then invest in a cheap mirror to lean against the wall.
