A greenhouse can be an excellent addition to your home if one of your hobbies is gardening. Besides the fact that you can experiment with plants and design a garden that’s uniquely yours, you can also cultivate veggies and aromatic herbs for your kitchen.
After all, how nice would it be to make a salad using veggies you’ve grown with love and care? Plus, it doesn’t have to be something you only do for summer goods; you can also have some leftovers for the winter!
Regardless of the motivation, having a greenhouse is a gardener’s biggest dream. Still, things can get pretty crazy if you don’t know what to do. So if you’re looking for guidance, here are a few tips to get you started.
Choose the Style that Works for You
The type of greenhouse you select for your gardening endeavours depends on the space you have available and what you want to do with it. For instance, if you want to choose a structure that’s easily accessible from the house and doesn’t occupy much space, you can choose a lean-to greenhouse.
On the same note, if you don’t plan on turning into a full-time gardener, there are mini structures that can be designed to your liking. There is a wide range of types of greenhouses, so it’s best to do a bit of research and understand which one works best for your current and future needs.
Interior Design
The space inside a greenhouse should be well-organized, especially if you’re growing multiple types of plants. Also, if the space is limited, you don’t want to waste even an inch.
So, when trying to design the interior of your greenhouse, think about what you plan to grow.
For instance, if you want to grow your own indoor plants, you should use a shelving system with access to a few tables. This way, you can place smaller plants on the shelves and do any repotting jobs (and more) on the tables.
Your Greenhouse Needs the Right Lighting
If you plan on growing veggies and herbs for family consumption, you will need to consider a few indoor grow light bars (depending on the space and number of plants).
Sunlight is often the main growth driver for these plants, but it’s not always reliable. Plus, if you want to start your seedlings early in the spring, you’ll need to create the right environment.
As a side note, if you are working on starting your veggie garden, here is a list of plants that are easy to grow, even for beginners:
- Strawberries – delicious with a bit of whipped cream
- Garlic and Onions – perfect for seasoning foods and don’t require special storage
- Leafy greens – lettuce, kale, rocket, and so on
- Tomatoes and Potatoes – ideal for salads and all sorts of other hearty foods
The Foundation
Even if you install a lean-to design, you still need a sturdy and level foundation. First, the foundation will create a barrier between the inside of the greenhouse and the elements. Second, the base will keep any vermin away from your precious plants.
Most greenhouse owners use concrete, wood, or pavers as the primary material for the foundation. Now, if you’re going for a bit of style while trying to stay on budget, wood is the best material you can choose. Plus, wood is easy to work with and allows the water to drain. Just make sure to choose a type of wood that’s rot-resistant and durable.
