The humble sofa is one of those pieces of furniture that gets plenty of use in the home. Here are 10 of the best contemporary design sofas offering stylish designs, colourful fabrics and plenty of comfortable seating options.
1. Orford sofa
The Orford sofa is designed by Matthew Hilton, creator of the wonderful Balzac chair. The large three seater sofa has plenty of space to lounge on – it’s just asking for you to curl up on it. We love the curvaceous design that does away with sofa cushions and the dinky aluminium legs. This mint green colour is pretty gorgeous too. The RRP is £4761, but it’s currently priced at £3808.80 from SCP.
2. Dot sofa
The sleek and stylish Dot sofa demonstrates how easily a plain fabric can be livened up – with a row of colourful, yet subtle, dots. If you’re not quite ready for a sofa print, but do want some colour, then this is the one for you. The sofa is made from 100% Designer’s Guild cotton fabric, with stained beech legs, and is sold exclusively by Oliver Bonas. The two seater Dot sofa is priced at £595.
3. Jersey sofa
The Jersey two seater in raspberry red is inspired by the 1950s diner look. We love the tapered black legs and pleated effect on the back of the sofa, plus it’s a steal at only £299 from Made.com. The compact size makes it ideal for a living room where you’re limited on space.
4. Romero adjustable sofa
This luxurious leather contemporary Romero sofa has a real feel-good factor. Made in Germany by Koinor and designed by Kurt Beier, we love the fact that the functional sofa is adjustable. You can alter the backrests by 180 degrees, fold down the back or adjust the armrests into seven different positions. The leather Romero sofa is available as a two seater or large two seater in an array of different leather colours, and costs from £2950 from Mac and Mac Interiors.
5. Studio couch
The Ercol studio couch is oozing with mid-century modern appeal. We like the cheery red fabric which contrasts with the beech and elm frame, but it’s available in other colours too, or a black frame option. The RRP is £2670, but it’s currently priced at £2136 in the sale at Furniture Village.
6. Eleanor corner sofa
If you’ve got a large space to fill and want plenty of seating, then a corner sofa could be the answer. This modern design Eleanor sofa provides all the comfort you need for lounging in comfort. It’s available in two or three seater options, from £1891.08 at Love Your Home For Less.
7. Flynn sofa
This fresh contemporary take on the classic Chesterfield sofa design looks super sophisticated, especially in the midnight black colour. The button and stud detailing help lift boxy lines and the two cushions it comes with adds extra comfort to this striking three seater sofa. The Flynn sofa is £699 at Made.com (compared to a typical high street price of £1490).
8. Lusk sofa
Inspired by mid 20th century furniture, the Lusk sofa was designed by Orla Kiely and is available exclusively from Heal’s. The shape of the sofa is smooth and uncomplicated, and it’s made from a hardwood frame and finished with walnut stained, beech tapered legs. If the vibrant pumpkin orange isn’t for you, this lovely design is also available in moss green, henna brown and reef blue. The Lusk sofa is normally priced at £2195, but is currently £1756 at Heal’s.
9. Burnham sofa
This luxury designer sofa by Terence Conran is a classic contemporary design. Made from solid beech-birch wood, and upholstered for your ultimate comfort, this large sofa is ready to grace a discerning living room. The Burnham sofa, upholstered with Dominic Kieffer china duck blue fabric, costs £4310 from The Conran Shop.
10. Smooth velvet sofa
What’s not to love about a velvet sofa? Perfect for relaxing in after a hard day at work, this square backed sofa, with its hardwood frame, is covered with smooth velvet. It’s available in Indian Ink or Aubergine colours, but they can also create a bespoke sofa with your choice of fabric if you wish. The three seater smooth velvet sofa is £1595 from Rose & Grey.

Hampshire Furniture says
I love these beautiful sofas! The shape and bright colours of the Lusk and Jersey sofas are amazing – loving the vintage vibe. Patterned sofas are really on trend this year but I think I’d prefer a block colour instead as they are easier to style.
