We’ve written hundreds of blog posts on Fresh Design Blog this year, covering topics such as interior design ideas, bargain buys, designer furniture, home accessories, decorating options, wallpaper and lots of gorgeous pieces you could add to a modern or contemporary home.
As part of our end of year review, here’s a look at our top 10 most popular posts written in 2011!
1. Taking the prime spot, our most popular post this year was the one looking at the Top 10 free online interior design room planning tools.
2. Second in line is the gorgeously colourful funky Marrakech patchwork sofa, designed and sold by Couch GB. What a brilliant design!
3. It’s good to see that so many of your love the bookshelf wallpaper as much as we do. Our piece featuring ideas to help you create a feature wall with bookshelf wallpaper is the third most popular post this year.
4. Wallpaper always features a lot in our top posts – here it is again, in the form of the Mandara contemporary silver tree wallpaper, which is our fourth most popular in 2011.
5. One of our favourite annual gardening events, and a great place to pick up new contemporary garden design ideas, is the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Our piece on Diarmuid Gavin’s Irish Sky Garden comes in as the fifth most popular 2011 post.
6. We’ve featured a variety of striking mirror designs this year, and even run a mirror competition. This contemporary handmade rolled art glass mosaic mirror has clearly caught the eye of many of you, as it’s taken the sixth spot.
7. We love quirky home accessories – and clearly so do you – as Morris the memo holder horse and the floppy disc sticky notes, which are both perfect for use in a study on a desk, came in at number seven.
8. Wall art in many forms, including 3D, have been popular in interior design again this year. The colourful gentle roe 3D MDF wall decoration came in at eighth place.
9. Our ninth most popular post was the stunning round driftwood and glass coffee table.
10. And finally, one of the best room dividers we’ve come across, the B&B Italia soft wall room divider, wins the award for our tenth most popular post in 2011.

 Redesign a room layout
If you’re thinking about redesigning a room and altering the layout, then it’s sometimes hard to work out whether your ideas will really work and if everything will fit in well. This is particularly so with rooms such as bathrooms or kitchens, when you’re considering totally re-arranging the existing layout.
One of the best ways of seeing whether or not your ideas are actually viable, and to get an idea of how they might look, is to put together a proposed layout of your room. If you don’t fancy drawing this all out on paper, then there are a wide variety of very useful free room planning tools online, many of which are simple and easy to use.
Some of the tools are useful for an initial play, to see how you could move key items around in a room. But if you want to get a more accurate idea of how things could work in your particular room, you will need to take measurements and input these into the room planners. Don’t forget to also take into consideration where windows or doors are located and which way they open!
There are online room planning tools run by individual brands, which use examples of their own products to help you plan a room, plus generic tools that guide you as to what size bath or sink you’ll require to meet your plans.
We successfully used one of the generic room planners to re-design our bathroom, completely altering the original layout. Using our measurements, it was very useful to see the maximum size of bath and shower unit that could fit in, whilst still giving enough space in the rest of the room.
Once you’ve produced your perfect room plan, you can usually save it, download it or print it out. If you’re employing a builder or contractor to do the work, then the room plan will be useful for them to get a better idea of what you’re looking for and find products that match the required sizes.
10 free online room planning design tools

2. Floor Planner – Floor Planner offers a useful tool (the basic option is free) to create new floor plans and room layouts.
3. Bathroom Accessories Guide – This back-to-basics tool uses ‘graph paper’ and simple measurements to show you what sizes of bathroom furniture may fit into the room you have available.
4. Sweet Home 3D – Free online interior design tool that allows you to create 2D plans and see previews in 3D. It’s available in a range of languages.
5. Autodesk Homestyle – Useful free drag and drop room planner tool that allows you to easily create floor plans, plus add decorating ideas too.
6. Ikea – Room planning tools from Ikea, including a kitchen planner.

Bensons For Beds Romeo Leather Bed
A bed is one of the most important home purchases you’ll make. Not only does it play a crucial role in helping you get a good night’s sleep, but it can also affect your back health too.
Back pain can make people’s lives a misery, but having the right bed for your back can make a significant difference.
So, before you hit the shops, here are our top 10 tips on buying a new bed.
1. Not everyone finds the same bed comfortable. Just because your friends or family rave about a certain bed, it’s not necessarily going to be the right one for you. So go and investigate the options for yourself.
2. When you’re looking for the perfect bed, be prepared to go and explore a variety of different beds, such as pocket spring beds, divans, bedsteads with slats or even water beds.
3. It’s often assumed that firm beds are automatically better for you, but this isn’t always true. The perfect bed should be supportive for your back, but also comfortable for you. You won’t get a good night’s sleep if you’re uncomfortable on a bed that’s too firm.
4. Bigger beds can be good, as you’ve got more space to move around and be comfortable, especially when there are two of you sharing it. But do be aware of the exact sizes before you part with your cash, as it’s no good if it won’t fit in your room! A standard double bed is 4ft 6” x 6ft 3”, a king size bed measures 5ft x 6ft 6” and a super king measures 6ft x 6ft 6”.
5. Be aware that not all mattresses are the same. Some of the options include pocket sprung (which has individual pockets of springs, is comfortable and supports your body well), open sprung (where the springs are hinged together and bodyweight can be spread evenly) and foam mattresses (which mould themselves to your back, provide comfort and relieve pressure).

6. Always check which type of mattress goes best with the bed you’re buying, as some are more suitable for certain bed styles and frames than others. Also, check the mattress size is the right fit for the bed base!
7. It’s normal to feel self-conscious whilst trying out a bed in a shop, and many people just lie down quickly, and then get up again. But in order to get the best idea of whether the bed and mattress are right for you, you really need to lie on each bed, in your normal sleeping position, for at least five minutes.
8. Your bed buying budget is of course important, but it’s better to look for the best value bed than the cheapest. A well constructed bed will generally last much longer, offer better comfort and support.
9. Sales take place at regular intervals throughout the year and you can often get good quality end of line or discontinued beds at great prices, so look out for real bargains!
10. Don’t forget to consider how you’ll get your new bed in place. Although some beds come apart easily, it’s still a big piece of furniture to manoeuvre into your home, especially if going upstairs. So find out what extra services the retailer offers, such as free delivery, free installation and whether they’ll take your old bed away too.

There’s a still a bit of a ‘love it or hate it’ view associated with wallpaper, not helped by the horror stories of people getting in a pickle putting it up, wallpaper falling down and air bubbles ending up everywhere. But if you learn how to hang it properly – or, better still, get an expert to do it for you – well hung wallpaper can create a stunning effect in your home.
Whether you’re keen to wallpaper a whole room, or simply want to create one wallpapered wall in a room for impact and colour, there are plenty of wallpaper designs to choose from. We’ve rounded up our current top 10 of designer wallpaper favourites. Enjoy!
1. Amy Butler Designer Wallpaper
Designer, Amy Butler, has a great range of wallpaper. Her Fountain design was inspired by trips to India and Indonesia and features a large, ornate motif.
The midnight colour option, featuring a lilac motif on a deep navy background, is particularly striking.
A 10m roll of Fountain wallpaper is available from Godfrey’s DIY for £21.99.
2. Miss Print Designer Wallpaper
Miss Print specialise in wall coverings with a modern and contemporary feel. Amongst their range, we particularly love the Saplings design.
Inspired by nature, the wallpaper features a distinctive leaf stem design. The paper is available in six different colours and some of the papers are matt, whilst others have a luxurious metallic or pearlescent finish.
Heal’s have the full range of Miss Print Saplings wallpapers in stock, priced at just shy of £60 per roll.
3. Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen Designer Wallpaper
Designer Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen has a great selection of wallpaper options available. The Navonna design, shown here in bitter chocolate gets its inspiration from Northern Italy.
The chocolate brown background is coupled with swirls, dots and other patterns in cream and lighter shades of brown. It would look great used as a statement wall in a room decorated in neutral shades, or in a chocolate themed room.
The Navonna bitter chocolate wallpaper is availale from TotallyHome, in lengths of 10m, for £24.99.

4. Sanderson Designer Wallpaper
One of our favourite Sanderson wallpapers (and judging by your responses, the feeling is shared) is the wonderful Dandelion Clocks design.
Based on a retro 50s design, the wallpaper features stylised dandelion in a bold colour combination. We love the Chaffinch shade, but other options are available.
The Dandelion Clocks wallpaper is stocked by various retailers, including John Lewis, where it’s priced at £39 per roll.
If you love this wallpaper design, matching home accessories and fabrics are available too – find more out here.

7. Julien MacDonald Designer Wallpaper
Designer, Julien MacDonald, has a striking range of wallpapers, many of which are ideally suited to a modern or contemporary home. In fact, you can’t get more striking than his Easy Tiger wallpaper.
This trendy faux animal print design creates a bold look on the wall – not least as it’s flocked for added effect.
The Easy Tiger wallpaper is available in two colour options (black and white or sandy tiger brown and black) and comes in rolls of 10m. It can be purchased from Graham and Brown for £60 per roll.

8. Turner Pocock Cazalet Designer Wallpaper
Turner Pocock Cazalet are renowned for producing a range of contemporary wallpapers with a twist. They have some great designs, including owlets and tennis rackets, that prove that unusual subjects can make fantastic wall coverings.
Our favourite is the running zebra, especially in the charcoal grey design. The print mixes gloss and matt effects, and features mirror images of the zebra, and it’s a lovely print to use around your home.
Amongst the retailers selling this wallpaper are Wallpaper Direct, who have various colour options available.

9. Fioretti Designer Wallpaper
This Fioretti wallpaper features a striking purple background with a large gold and black flower-like design printed on it. Seen close up, the purple seems quite bright, but when you see it in place on the wall, the colour seems softer.
Either way, if you’d like this wallpaper on your wall, it costs £47 for a 10m roll from Fabrics and Papers.

10. Mr Perswall Designer Wallpaper
Designer wallpaper doesn’t have to be just for grown-ups – kids (and big kids) will love this colourful Fish Wish wallpaper by Mr Perswall.
Featuring an array of nose-to-tail fish, this rainbow effect wallpaper is brilliant for brightening up a dull room.
It’s not cheap at £65 per roll, but it is gorgeous.
