Natural wood cube storage
Display cubes offer a relaxed alternative to fixed shelving and with this set of six freestanding cubes, you can arrange them in a configuration of your choice.
They come in a natural wood finish, but are ripe for being altered. We love the idea of adding a coat of contrasting coloured paint inside each cube or by sticking in some favourite wallpaper designs.
With the cubes measuring different sizes and depths, there are varying spaces inside to add books, display pictures or stand vases.
The set of six stacking storage display cubes cost £129 from Rockett St George.

After the success of their first range of products at M&S in the autumn, there’s a new selection of items designed by Conran available at Marks and Spencer.
This time around, it’s hard to pick just a few favourites, as there are so many lovely pieces. Here are a few examples:
Conran Amis sofa
The large Amis sofa, with its gentle curves, is oozing in comfort. It’s available in a choice of Conran-exclusive fabrics. Some of the other pieces in the rest of the room include the Conran Brindley open shelving unit, the Conran Turned Pedastal table lamp and the Conran Kilim patchwork rug.
Conran Coleridge seating
As a change from a sofa, the contemporary modular seating units are perfect for creating your own seating arrangement. The Coleridge corner chair can be teamed with the Coleridge one seater to create small or large seating configurations. A matching Coleridge footstool is available too. We love the bold red against the wooden floor, but other colour choice options are available.
For the bedroom, Conran has designed this pure and simple Harrison white bedstead, adorned with their Spring check bedding range.

SquarePear Furniture create some really unusual pieces of furniture and home accessories, including this modern circuit shelving unit.
We love the loop design, and rounded corners, of this useful home storage solution and the white satin paint finish gives it a sleek and smooth look.
There’s plenty of room on the shelf to store a good number of books or trinkets, plus there’s extra storage room on top, for example to stand a photo, candle or vase.
The circuit shelving unit costs £190 and can be ordered from the SquarePear Furniture store on Not On The High Street.

Ever wanted to suspend your books in thin air? If your magical skills aren’t quite up to achieving this feat, then the Umbra Conceal bookshelf can do it for you!
This nifty shelf invention, designed by Miron Lior, creates the illusion of an invisible, floating shelf on which you can stack a small collection of books (it’s similar to the Self Shelf that we featured a while ago).
Made from metal, the shelf comes with instructions as to how to fit it from the wall – it needs a couple of screws – and can accommodate books of up to 20cm in depth, and a maximum load of 6.8kg.
The Umbra Conceal shelf is available to buy from Red Candy, where it’s priced at £9.50.

Many of the Boxing Days sales are in full swing now – hope you’ve got lots of bargains, if you were after them! – and by the looks of it, lots of items have been selling well.

3. The distinctively designed Content by Conran matador armchair, in caterpillar green, reduced from £999 to £699.

5. More good shelving in the form of the Content by Conran Kendal alcove shelving in oak, reduced from £695 to £399.
6. A Nick Munro walnut dining table, reduced from £899 to £599.

Ever wondered what a sound looks like? According to Frederik Roije, it looks a bit like this!
Yes, this rather creative Storyline shelf has been built in a shape based on the graph produced of the frequencies generated when the word ‘bliss’ is spoken.
It all sounds a bit technical, but in simple terms this is a really funkily designed shelf that will look attractive on any wall. We’re big fans of unusual shelves and this one ticks all the right boxes.
The shelf is made out of anodised steel, coated with a dark grey finish and is tough enough to hold books and other items.
The Storyline shelf measures 90 x 20 x 28cm and is available for £145 from the lovely DutchByDesign.

Conran balance shelving
If you’re in need of some new shelving, then how about this eye-catching balance shelving?
It’s made from solid lipped and veneered European oak (also available in walnut for a slightly higher price) and offers a modern, but practical, design. You can use it against a wall simply for storage, or use it in a larger room to divide the space and use it for objects d’art.
It would look great used like this, for example, in an open plan home, where it could help define certain areas, but not block out light or act as a ‘wall’.
The oak balance shelving is available from the Conran Shop for £725.

Self Shelf floats like magic!
If you’re looking for a novel form of shelving which will get noticed for all the right reasons, then how about the Self Shelf?
This clever shelving invention is basically a fake book that attaches to your wall and acts as a shelf. It’s sturdy and can hold a fair weight, but looks great as it appears to be floating on your wall.
The Self Shelf is available in three colours – yellow, blue and red – and costs £19.95 from DutchByDesign.
