How to create a contemporary coastal theme in your home

Thursday, September 13th, 2012

We’ve recently written a guest post for Houzz on creating a contemporary coastal chic look in your home and thought we’d share some of our product picks here.

Coastal or nautical interior design schemes remain a popular choice, but if you thought they only work in shabby chic or vintage homes, then it’s time to think again. This design trend works wonderfully in contemporary or modern homes too and there are lots of gorgeous products around to help you effortlessly create the look.

The Whitby wallpaper by Mini Moderns is a brilliant modern interpretation of a nautical theme – you can almost see those waves moving!

Sardine Run serving bowl

Jersey Pottery’s Sardine Run tableware is distinctive and iconic. It’s named after the annual mass spawning of sardines and the contemporary design reflects this down to a tee.

The serving dish is lovely and practical to use at a dining table, but too nice to hide away in a cupboard when it’s not in use. It’s stocked by Starfish Bay, along with lots of other matching pieces of pottery.

Pantone Colour of the Year 2012: Tangerine Tango

Orange coloured wallpaper and interior ideas

Pantone Tangerine Tango

Each year, the Pantone Color Institute reveal their colour of the year and for 2012 they’ve declared it to be the vibrant hue of Tangerine Tango (17-1463).

After being somewhat uninspired by last year’s colour choice (Honeysuckle, Pantone 18-2120), the cheery reddish orange shade of Tangerine Tango is definitely more uplifting and inspiring.

As a colour, orange is regarded as being energising, so using dashes of orange within your interiors may both liven up the look of a room and uplift your spirits.

Keen to get orange into your home? Here are some ideas for using Tangerine Tango and orange in your home!

The orange Pantone folding chair is £45 from Dotmaison.

Adventure wallpaper by Rob RyanFresh Design Blog features Rob RyanRob Ryan collaborates with Mini Moderns

Designer Rob Ryan has collaborated with Mini Moderns to produce his first wallpaper range.

The wallpaper is based on designs from the end papers of Rob’s latest book, “A Sky Full of Kindness,” and features birdcages (which were originally cut from paper, in Ryan’s typical style) and tiny escapee birds. It’s hard to see in the images, but the birds are holding tiny messages in their beaks, spelling out the sentence, “Our adventure is about to begin.”

The wallpaper is available to purchase in three funky colourways – sky blue, chalky violet and afternoon green – and costs £50 per 10m roll from Mini Moderns.

Bags are not part of our normal remit, but we couldn’t help falling for these canvas bags by Mini Moderns, not least as they feature some of the fab designs we’ve seen before on cushions and wallpaper.

The C-60 cassette tape design looked great on the cushion we blogged about previously, but it looks great on the bag too. Likewise, the Sitting Comfortably? chair design has featured on a cotton drill cushion, and the Town Canvas on wallpaper.  It just goes to show how versatile some designs can be.

The Mini Moderns canvas bags cost £15 each and are available in a choice of designs, including C-60, Town Canvas and Sitting Comfortably?

Ruby photographic cushion

Ruby photographic cushion

Old black and white and sepia photos are lovely and look great used in the home, framed or displayed in other ways. But this has got to be one of the most unusual ways we’ve seen old photos used – on a cushion.

Made by Mini Moderns, the Ruby cushion features a range of four colour photographic prints arranged on a black background. The prints are one side only, with the other side of the cushion being white, and it measures 410mm by 410mm.

All of the cushions designed by Mini Moderns (and there are some other great designs) are all produced with safety in mind, so have no zips or buttons. Instead, the cushion is a pillowcase style, that’s tucked under, making it easy to take the cover off if you need to.

The Ruby photographic cushion comes complete with cushion pad and costs £35.

For the ultimate in wall personalisation, and if you enjoy getting hands on and creative, you can’t get much better than being able to colour your own wallpaper!

Forget all the rules your parents may have told you about not drawing on the walls – there are now some fabulous wallpapers designed so that it can be coloured in, in whatever colours you so desire.

Although it might be a bit of an onerous task to colour it all in if you’ve papered it on a lot of walls, for one wall, or in a small room, it could be a lot of fun. Children would no doubt love it too.

If you like clocks, then the Tick Tock wallpaper features a range of clock designs, but there are also colour-me-in papers with houses (Do You Live in a Town? wallpaper) or chairs (Sitting Comfortably? wallpaper).

These great wallpapers are all available from Mini Moderns for £38 per roll.
