Seletti Trip sideboard

Why have a plain sideboard cabinet when you could have a funky one?

This multi coloured fifties style Trip sideboard by Seletti would definitely brighten up a room and provide you with both functional storage and great design.

The sideboard provides plenty of storage space within, including two sliding doors at the front, three shelves in the right hand side compartment, two shelves in the middle, then four vertical compartments on the left hand side. These latter compartments are ideal for stacking magazines in, or there’s just enough space to slide in a laptop.

We love the stripe design of the Trip sideboard, but it’s also available in a choice of other designs too, including multi spots and black and white dogtooth.

The Seletti storage cabinet is available to buy from Design55.

Fresh Design: Top 10 Posts in 2011

Saturday, December 31st, 2011

We’ve written hundreds of blog posts on Fresh Design Blog this year, covering topics such as interior design ideas, bargain buys, designer furniture, home accessories, decorating options, wallpaper and lots of gorgeous pieces you could add to a modern or contemporary home.

As part of our end of year review, here’s a look at our top 10 most popular posts written in 2011!

1. Taking the prime spot, our most popular post this year was the one looking at the Top 10 free online interior design room planning tools.

2. Second in line is the gorgeously colourful funky Marrakech patchwork sofa, designed and sold by Couch GB. What a brilliant design!

3. It’s good to see that so many of your love the bookshelf wallpaper as much as we do. Our piece featuring ideas to help you create a feature wall with bookshelf wallpaper is the third most popular post this year.

4. Wallpaper always features a lot in our top posts – here it is again, in the form of the Mandara contemporary silver tree wallpaper, which is our fourth most popular in 2011.

5. One of our favourite annual gardening events, and a great place to pick up new contemporary garden design ideas, is the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. Our piece on Diarmuid Gavin’s Irish Sky Garden comes in as the fifth most popular 2011 post.

6. We’ve featured a variety of striking mirror designs this year, and even run a mirror competition. This contemporary handmade rolled art glass mosaic mirror has clearly caught the eye of many of you, as it’s taken the sixth spot.

7. We love quirky home accessories – and clearly so do you – as Morris the memo holder horse and the floppy disc sticky notes, which are both perfect for use in a study on a desk, came in at number seven.

8. Wall art in many forms, including 3D, have been popular in interior design again this year. The colourful gentle roe 3D MDF wall decoration came in at eighth place.

9. Our ninth most popular post was the stunning round driftwood and glass coffee table.

10. And finally, one of the best room dividers we’ve come across, the B&B Italia soft wall room divider, wins the award for our tenth most popular post in 2011.

Contemporary design utensils for a funky kitchen

Funky utensils

Fed up with boring kitchen utensils? Check out these great designs, which will liven things up no end!

This set of Wild Flower kitchen utensils are wonderfully designed and look great, whilst still being highly practical. They’re handcrafted in Suffolk, using beech wood and stainless steel, and come in a beech stand, where they all fit perfectly when not in use.

The set includes the Bluebell Scoop, Yarrow Skimmer, Buttercup Whisk, Rag Spag Spoon, Sorrel Petal Serving Spoon and Daisy Masher.

It’s a great set and one that will look great displayed in your kitchen.

The set of wild flower utensils is available from Boije on Bouf and is priced at £119.85 (yes, a bit pricey for kitchen utensils, but these are really special!).

If you can’t afford the whole set, then each of the utensils can be purchased individually for £19.95 each.

Funky pink mirror from Ghost Furniture

Ghost furniture designer pink mirror

Unusual mirror

If you’re looking for a mirror with a difference, and aren’t afraid of using colour in your home (we heartily recommend it!), then this rather funky mirror from Ghost Furniture is definitely worth a look.

Rather than featuring one single piece of mirror, it’s made from a collection of mirrors that were found at the Bastille Antiques Fair in Paris, and have been pieced together on a black  board to produce an interesting design. It’s reminiscent of a flower shape, with one rounded mirror piece in the centre and eight pieces surrounding it.

The frame was sourced at the same fair and has been brought to life with a coating of bright pink, adding a wonderful splash of colour and contrast to the piece.

The vintage restored mirror by Ghost Furniture costs £225.

Modern and contemporary Karlsson designer clock

Leaf design clock

One of the best known names for designing modern and funky contemporary clocks is Karlsson.

Karlsson are responsible for many great clock designs and we’ve featured several over the last few years, including the DIY passe partout Karlsson clock, the book clock, the flower field glass clock and the black lotus clock.

The leaves design clock is another distinctive Karlsson design, which is oozing with character and colour. The clock mechanism (in the middle of the clock) comes separately to the colourful leaf shapes, giving you the chance to put the clock together on the wall as you see fit.

You can arrange the leaves in the way shown here or create your own new look. Clocks have never been so fun!

The Karlsson leaves clock was £55, but is now only £39.95 in the sale at Dutch by Design.

Funky fabric hand crafted decoupage stool

Funky stool

I’m all for having a few quirky pieces of furniture in your home, whether it’s something unusual, colorful or something that reflects your personality or interests.

Being a fan of decoupage and fabric, and loving splashes of colour, it’s no wonder this fabric decoupage stool caught my eye.

The tall wooden stool has been covered all over with an assortment of colourful fabric. In order to make it functional, the fabric surface has been sealed and is now wipeable, so you can easily clean up any spills or marks when it’s in use.

The fabric decoupage stool costs £60 from Viva Fabric. If you like the decoupage look, then check out the rest of their products, as they specialise in creating funky and contemporary furniture and accessories and have lots more unusual creations to look at.
