Monday, February 11th, 2013

The humble sofa is one of those pieces of furniture that gets plenty of use in the home. Here are 10 of the best contemporary design sofas offering stylish designs, colourful fabrics and plenty of comfortable seating options.

1. Orford sofa

Soft mint green contemporary stylish sofa

The Orford sofa is designed by Matthew Hilton, creator of the wonderful Balzac chair. The large three seater sofa has plenty of space to lounge on – it’s just asking for you to curl up on it. We love the curvaceous design that does away with sofa cushions and the dinky aluminium legs. This mint green colour is pretty gorgeous too. The RRP is £4761, but it’s currently priced at £3808.80 from SCP.

2. Dot sofa

Retro designer contemporary colourful sofa

The sleek and stylish Dot sofa demonstrates how easily a plain fabric can be livened up – with a row of colourful, yet subtle, dots. If you’re not quite ready for a sofa print, but do want some colour, then this is the one for you. The sofa is made from 100% Designer’s Guild cotton fabric, with stained beech legs, and is sold exclusively by Oliver Bonas. The two seater Dot sofa is priced at £595.

3. Jersey sofa

The Jersey two seater in raspberry red is inspired by the 1950s diner look. We love the tapered black legs and pleated effect on the back of the sofa, plus it’s a steal at only £299 from Made.com. The compact size makes it ideal for a living room where you’re limited on space.

4. Romero adjustable sofa

Contemporary adjustable leather sofa

This luxurious leather contemporary Romero sofa has a real feel-good factor. Made in Germany by Koinor and designed by Kurt Beier, we love the fact that the functional sofa is adjustable. The leather Romero sofa is available as a two seater or large two seater in an array of different leather colours, and costs from £2950 from Mac and Mac Interiors.

5. Studio couch

When you’re having extra guests to stay, a sofa bed is a useful way of putting people up for the night without too much hassle.

If contemporary is your preferred home style, then you can’t beat the Yoko sofa bed for design, comfort and usability.

Yoko is a minimalist sofa – it doesn’t take up too much room, is perfect for a spare room or study, and is a comfortable sofa to use. When you need an extra bed for the night, it simply folds right out and turns into a flat bed. Even better, the cushions are fixed in place, so there are no bulky cushions to move or store whilst the bed is in use, as is the case with some sofa beds.

Buying a New Sofa

Monday, November 5th, 2012

Contemporary fresh design sofa

When it’s time to buy a new sofa, or buy one for the first time, there are a few vital points to consider before you set off to the store, or settle online to find the object you will be parking your posterior on for the next few years.

We all want value for money when purchasing anything new, so here are three important points to take into consideration when shopping for your new sofa.

The Frame

You need a frame that will stand the test of time, so it needs to be sturdy. A decent frame will have dowelling, screws and glue, firmly holding the construction of the frame together.

A frame that is just flimsily nailed or stapled together or has no wooden blocks reinforcing the corners will not be sturdy and will shorten your sofas life immeasurably.

Suspension

Suspension basically means the springs that give your sofa it’s bounce and it’s resilience to being jumped on by the children, or heavily plonked on at the end of a long day!

You need to pay attention to how the springs are set in the frame. As with the frame, these are hidden from view on your sofa, so these are important things to look up in the catalogue, or to ask your salesperson about in the shop.

The tighter the coils of these springs are fixed to the frame the more longevity you will get from their ability to support all those people sitting on the sofa! So, coils that are TIED into the frame will be stronger than coils that are just DROPPED into the frame.

The Cushions

The cushions of your sofa need to be durable both filling wise and material wise. Removable covers or wipe down surfaces are a must, if you are wanting your sofa to stand the test of time. Take time to work out how you best want your sofa to feel, soft and squidgy, or hard and firm?

It’s always a personal choice, but researching the possible fillings for your cushions, will mean you know exactly what you’re plumping for when you get to the store.

If you’re after a contemporary styled sofa and chair for your home, then we’d recommend a look at the Sullivan snuggler and chair range from John Lewis.

We first came across the Sullivan snuggler sofa last year, when it was available in a rather funky stripe fabric. Now the furniture is back in stock, this time in a great range of plain coloured fabrics.

There’s nothing plain about the colours though – there’s a palette of 11 shades to choose from, including a bright pink, cheery yellowteal blue and red.

Both the Sullivan sofa and chair are nicely designed and styled, with neat rounded arms and and dainty maple wood feet.

The Sullivan chair retails at £399 and the Sullivan Snuggler is £599.

Contemporary sofa

Every home needs a wow factor piece of furniture, however small or large it is. A gorgeous sofa can do the job very well and create a design statement in a room, plus it provides a practical piece of furniture to use and enjoy.

This stunning berry red two seater sofa has a wow factor in terms of colour (put it in a neutral room, and you’ll have a focal point and new colour to add to the interior design scheme) and in terms of design (it’s contemporary, but the smooth lines add a great retro feel too).

The Jonah sofa is designed by British designer, James Harrison, who shot to fame after winning the Elle Decoration Young Designer of the Year competition in 2007. It’s well made, comfortable and upholstered in a linen mix fabric.

This lovely two seater red sofa is available exclusively from Made.com, where it’s priced at only £499 (the equivalent high street price would be £1,499). If berry red doesn’t do it for you, the sofa is also available in a classic warm grey.

Other matching pieces are available too, including a Jonah three seater sofa (£599) and Jonah armchair (£375).
