Minimalist black sticks coat stand

Contemporary coat stand

Contemporary coat stand

In the past, coat stands have been great big bulky things that have taken up far too much room in your hall, even without a pile of coats hanging on them.

But not any more.

This black sticks contemporary piece proves that coat stands really can be minimal. Although it looks ineffectual, as it’s made up of only three ’sticks’, the coat stand is suitably sturdy enough to accommodate numerous coats and jackets.

The black sticks coat stand is available from Heal’s.

Glass flower dish

Glass flower dish

This beautiful glass dish is handmade in a lovely magnolia flower shape. Measuring 18cm in diameter, you can clearly see the petals of the flowerhead and the centre of the bloom and it’s been nicely finished off with a subtle gold shade.

It would look lovely on a shelf, windowsill or table, left empty or filled with sweets or nibbles.

You can buy the magnolia dish from ZiggiZiggi, for £13.50.

wave-coatrack-black  wave-coat-rack-back

Hang your coats in style, on this creative wave design coat rack.

Designed by J-me (not to be confused with Jamie Oliver’s Jme), and made from powder coated mild steel the wave design coat rack can hold coats (up to15, apparently), as well as gloves and scarves.

As well as the waves, that act as coat hangers, there’s also a handy little shelf at the back, and at the top, that you can use for extra storage. It could be the perfect spot for putting your keys, for example, or even your glasses.

To add this stylish modern coat rack to your home, pop over to All Up and On, where it’s available for £40.

Crystal and sterling silver bowl from Aspinal of London

Special crystal bowl
Special crystal bowl

I’ve previously only associated Aspinal of London with luxury leather goods, but did you know they sold other home items too?

Take this crystal decorative bowl, for example. It’s not any old average bowl, but is a special piece made from clear crystal glass with a sterling silver base.

It’s not cheap, but it is hand crafted and, for a special occasion, it would make a very nice home gift. Measuring 13.75″ in diameter, the bowl is the ideal size for a fruit bowl.

The crystal glass and sterling silver bowl is available from Aspinal of London.

The return of the nesting bird paperclip holder

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010
Create a nest out of paperclips

Build a paperclip nest

We love it when we find items we’ve previously featured reduced to super fabby prices.

Remember the nesting bird paperclip holder?

This quirky little piece, which would look great on a desk, was reduced by Objects of Design from its original price of £32.50, to £24.50, before being dropped a further 50% down to £12.25.

We couldn’t possibly resist that, so a white nesting bird is now winging its way towards our desk.

Get yours before they all fly away!

This loopy fruit bowl is apparently designed to help air circulate to all areas of your fruit, to help keep it in tip top condition.

It’s designed by Black + Blum, an Anglo-Swiss partnership set up by Dan Black and Martin Blum, and is made from a single piece of free flowing chrome finish steel wire.

It’s available to buy from Handpicked Collection, where it’s currently in the sale.

What are your home and garden resolutions for 2010?

Sunday, January 3rd, 2010

Welcome to 2010 and Happy New Year from all at Fresh Design Blog!

As is traditonal at this time of year, we’re beginning to think about the things we’d like to do in our homes and gardens during 2010.

For example, our editor is planning to decorate the hall and stairs area of her home and create a new patio in the garden, for summer entertaining.

I (Sarah) am looking at decorating my bedroom this year and am currently debating some gorgeous bold wallpaper designs.

We’d love to hear what you’re planning to do to your homes and gardens this year. Don’t worry if you’re not doing anything major - anything from buying a new tablecloth or changing your home accessories, to planting tubs of pots for the garden can make a difference.

Please leave a comment and share your aims, resolutions and ideas for your home in 2010.

Next red swirl bottle vase

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009
Add a splash of colour

Add a splash of colour

If you’re looking to add a splash of colour to your home, then decorative accessories are great to use.

This red swirl bottle from Next, with its slightly orange swirls, would certainly give a good dose of colour and you could use it as a simple vase too, as a single stem would fit in really well.

The red swirl bottle costs £22 from Next.
