Five of the best bookends

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009
Whether you’re in need of propping up unruly piles of books, or like to have extra design touches around your home, bookends are the ideal solution. They can be purely used for practical purposes, or included in your home for their decorative look, and are available in a wide variety of styles, looks and colours. We’ve picked out our current top five favourites.

1. Eco Chic Recycled Bookends

These Eco Chic bookends are a simple design that will fit in easily with the rest of your home style. As an added bonus, they’re an eco product too.

They’re made in India from 100% recycled cotton scraps, retrieved from the leftovers in factories making clothes. The cotton is subsequently pulped to form paper and this has been moulded to form bookends and embossed with a mock croc finish.

The Eco Chic bookends are available from Graham and Green, in a turqouise blue shade, and currently cost £10.85 per pair in their sale.

2. Aluminium Globe Bookends

These chunky, heavy bookends are made from aluminium metal and feature an intricately carved globe. The globe is split in half by the two bookends and together they’ll ensure your books won’t fall into disarray.

Unfortunately, these do come at a price, but should be longlasting and are a lovely decorative addition to your home too. They’re available from Artisanti for £140.

3. Black Lacquer Oriental Bookends

This pair of black lacquered bookends have an oriental feel to them. They’re simple in style and design, but have been given an added touch with the addition of a jade medallion on the end.

The black lacquer bookends are available from Oka and cost £34 for the pair.

4. Cast Iron Bookends

These heavy duty cast iron bookends are nice and sturdy for keeping control of heavy books. Crafted from cast iron in a traditional French style, they feature a wonderfully ornate design.
The cast iron bookends are available from La Maison Bleue for £26.95.

5. Morph and Chas Bookends

If you were a child of the 70s or 80s, you’ll no doubt recognise these cheeky characters. Created by Tony Hart, and immortalised on  TV shows such as Take Hart and Hartbeat, Morph and his sidekick, Chas, have been transformed into polyresin bookends.

Measuring 15cm in height, the two quirky characters can now prop up your books in their own characteristic way. The set of bookends is available from Urban Outfitters for £24.

Five of the best garden parasols

Monday, June 29th, 2009
parasol

It’s lovely to have hot, sunny days, but in order to make the most of your garden during the hot weather, a parasol is essential for providing some shade. Whether you’re sitting out relaxing, or dining alfresco, then here’s our pick of five of the best garden parasols.

 1. Hardwood parasols are a long-term favourite and this Princess parasol, designed by Paul Reef Parasols, features a classic green woven polyester top with a hardwood pole.

The parasol top is coated with 3M Scotchguard and it has vents in the top too, to help prevent it taking off. In order to put the parasol up and down easily, there is a four-pulley corded system. The hardwood pole is nice and sturdy and is finished off with brass fittings.

The Princess parasol is available from Lakeland for £99.91 and it comes complete with a heavy duty zipped storage bag.

2. This is a very nifty freestanding garden parasol from John Lewis. The clever design means that you can easily position your chair or sun lounger underneath the parasol, rather than to the side of it, and you don’t have to have it positioned in the centre of a table either.

John Lewis freestanding garden parasol

The only slight downside is that you do need to have four 45cm x 45cm paving slabs for the base. That aside, the John Lewis freestanding garden parasol is available for £152.

3. For a bright and cheerful look, how about this multi coloured parasol from Heal’s? Exclusive to Heal’s, the parasol claims to be both weather resistant and resistant to colour fading. It measures 200cm in diameter, with a 3.5cm diameter pole.

The multi parasol from Heal’s was originally £125, but is now down to £99 in the sale.

4. This Indian garden parasol, from The Urban Garden, is in a pretty shade of pink. Its small size (when opened, its diameter is 117cm) makes it perfect for use with one or two people and its stylish design adds colour and charm.

Pink Indian garden parasol

Made in India, the parasol has a separate painted wooden pole, with an aluminium decorative trim and stainless steel finial. The two part parasol comes presented in a handy cotton storage bag, with a detachable finial.

If you’d like to adorn your garden with this pretty pink Indian garden parasol, you can buy it from The Urban Garden for £134.

5. For a parasol that certainly won’t break the bank and looks good, how about this stylish green rectangular parasol from Tesco?

The parasol canopy is made from a dark green polyester fabric and the pole is made from FSC hardwood. A pulley system makes for easy opening and closing.

Sunday, June 14th, 2009

We’re always on the look out for new, innovative and unusual products - and that includes vases. Here are five of the best modern and stylish vases we’ve found recently.

Napali porcelain vase

1. This striking Napali porcelain vase would look equally good on its own, used as an accessory, as it would with a simple arrangement of flowers in.

It measures 10″ high and has a delicate pattern of swirls swishing around the outside (it’s the kind of design that would look great as a lamp or lampshade too). It’s $120 from Clio Home

Normann Swing unique vase

2. For a vase that will create a wow factor, then you can’t go too far wrong with this Normann Swing vase.
A truly unique piece, each glass vase is blown by mouth, so no two are completely identical. The swing vase is available in three sizes, with prices rangings from £22 to £33, but there’s a special offer on at the moment for all three for £75.

As well as purple, the vase is available in black, white, red or green. Buy it from Plain Gorgeous.

Grass vase

3. If you’re after a natural look, then how about this cleverly designed vase? It’s wonderfully eyecatching and is officially described as a Grass Vase (although we think it resembles asparagus stems much more than grass).

It’s actually cleverly crafted out of ceramic and is made in Denmark.

The grass vase is available in three sizes, priced from $51 to $66, and can be purchased from Clio Home.

Gocce Murano glass drop vase

Here it’s used to great effect in the form of an elegant glass drop vase.

Designed by Formia Glass, and part of the Gocce collection, the Murano vase features an opaque jet black core that’s surrounded by crystal clear glass. The contemporary style vase is 30cm tall.

Buy it online from Murano Glass for £110.
