The world's most expensive and exclusive bed

Baldacchino Supreme bed

You could be looking at the world’s most expensive bed!

That’s the claim being made in some quarters after this exclusive bed went on sale priced at £4 million.

This luxury four poster double bed, called the Baldacchino Supreme bed, was created by British designer, Stuart Hughes, and Italian design company, Hebanon. It’s handcrafted from chestnut and ash wood, with a cherry wood canopy, and is inlaid with 107kg (236lb) of 24ct gold.

Any old bedding of course won’t do, so the bed comes complete with Italian silk and cotton drapes. The headboard can even be customised to accommodate diamonds for the ultimate in bling finish!

Only two of the Baldacchino Supreme beds, suitable for billionaires, have been made and each has taken three months to make. Amazingly, one of the beds has already been purchased by an Italian businessman. Could the other one be yours?!

Valentine's Day home heart gift idea

Heart chopping board

The shops are full of Valentine’s Day gift ideas and, whilst some may be tacky, a lot of the home-related gift ideas are things that you can use time and time again (and are definitely worth buying as a treat for yourself!).

This heart shaped chopping board has a slight novelty factor, but as chopping boards go, it’s a useful size to have in your kitchen and could serve many a food preparation need.

The heart chopping board is made from rubberwood and costs £9.50 from M&S, who have a whole section of Valentine’s Day gift ideas for the home (some better than others).

Designer lamp light by Tord Boontje

Icarus lamp shade

Designer, Tord Boontje, is known for his unusual creations (like the decorative steel ivy panel we featured before) and this feathery lamp shade is no exception.

The creative Icarus lamp shade design features a tumbling swathe of overlapping feathers, that looks like the white wing of a swan. The shade measures 78cm in length and can accommodate light bulbs of up to 60 watts.

Not surprisingly, and as the name suggests, the inspiration behind the light comes from the tale of Icarus, who flew too close to the sun and lost his wings.  Although the idea of having a feather-like lamp shade may not appeal to everyone, it’s an effective design.

The Icarus lamp shade by Tord Boontje is sold by Dutch by Design and costs £75.

Create a feature wall with bookshelf wallpaper

Young and Battaglia wallpaper

Vintage bookshelf wallpaper

In an ideal world, I’d have wall-to-wall bookshelves in the living room (and I have no shortage of books to fill them with), but as there’s not quite room to achieve this, bookshelf wallpaper is a great alternative.

Bookshelf and book themed wallpaper has become very popular, with several designers creating book-ish wallcoverings. It’s ideal for using to create a feature wall in your home and the bookshelf design works in even the smallest spaces.

For feature walls, you could have one wall papered in the bookshelf wallpaper, use it in the alcoves either side of a fireplace to give the impression of bookshelves, or simply use a small strip or section of it on a wall to add interest and design.

The vintage bookshelf wallpaper shown above is designed by Young & Battaglia. The textured wallpaper gives the impression that your walls are lined with bookshelves and piled with stacks of books.

The wallpaper is made in England, is 55cm wide and is sold in three metre rolls. It’s available to purchase for £70 a roll from Bouf.

For a slightly different look, the same design is available in white (£70 from Studiomold).

Bookshelf wallpaper designs by Deborah Bowness

Deborah Bowness bookshelf wallpaper

Designer Deborah Bowness has also created some fantastic bookshelf design wallpaper. Her Genuine Fake Bookshelf and Original Genuine Bookshelf wallpaper designs are both very realistic and would transform a wall of your home into an instant bookcase.

One single, hand-printed drop of Deborah Bowness wallpaper costs from £169 from Caravan Style, or you can order direct from Deborah Bowness.

Tracey Kendall book wallpaper How to use book wallpaper in your home

Tracey Kendall has done away with the need for shelves in her book-themed wallpaper – instead, the paperback books are simply stacked together.

The multicoloured spines of the books not only add an element of colour into the wallpaper, but they also provide fascinating viewing, as you can’t resist looking at the book titles to see if there’s anything you’ve read or want to read (yes, it features real book titles).

The hand-screenprinted stacked paperback wallpaper costs £128 per roll from Anthropologie.

Bookshelf design wallpaper from Wallpaper Direct

Ex Libris wallpaper

For a slightly more traditional look, this Ex Libris bookshelf wallpaper is designed by Cole and Sons and forms part of their Fornasetti Collection.

The design features a library of books etched in black on white, with beige shelving. The books are nicely finished off with gold detail on the book titles – just like you’d see on old, vintage books.

The Ex Libris bookshelf wallpaper is £78 per roll from Wallpaper Direct.

Have you used bookshelf wallpaper in your home? We’d love to hear what you’ve done with it!

Quirky ceramic rubber glove sink tidy

Wednesday, January 19th, 2011

Funky ceramic sink tidyModern sink tidy for a contemporary home

This looks like a yellow rubber glove discarded by the sink after doing the washing up, but it’s actually a ceramic sink tidy!

This quirky item has been cleverly created by designer Helen Johannessen, from Yoyo Ceramics, and looks exactly like the infamous Marigold’s. It’s got all the details and creases of the real thing, as if it’s just been taken off.

Placed by the sink, the ceramic rubber glove would be a useful place to store your scourer, plug or dish cloth and it’s sure to fool people.

It costs £22 and can be purchased from Yoyo Ceramics.

If you like the quirkiness of this design, then some  similar items we’ve featured before include the glass plastic bag bowl, the porcelain flour bag container, the porcelain carton milk jug and the tin can storage jar.
