Cute penguin print

Cute penguin print

Isn’t this little fella cute?

Sold unframed, the print features a contemporary style penguin image, with ‘P is for Penguin’ at the top and letters of the alphabet running along the bottom.

It would be great for the wall of a children’s room or nursery, but we might be tempted to sneak it into an adult room too!

Printed in the UK on recycled paper, and using vegetable inks, the penguin print measures 310mm x 420mm and it costs £20 from Hunkydory Home.

Kathleen Hills Star pendant light

White china star pendant light

You may realise by now that we’re rather fond of pendant lights, and this one is no exception.

The delicate looking white star pendant light is designed by Kathleen Hill and is made from bone china.

The design is apparently inspired by vintage Christmas tree lights. The pendant comes with a china ceiling rose and a white electrical cord.

The star pendant light can be purchased from Roost Living for £72.

Three contemporary bedroom ideas

Gorgeous gold bedroom
Gorgeous gold bedroom

One of the best bits of planning your own home is the wonderful excuse to look at ideas for different rooms and see what other people are doing.

We’ve been drooling over some bedroom pictures on the Living Etc gallery and thought we’d share some of our favourites.

This gold room has unusual textured wallpaper, which is accented by a gold cushion on the bed. But it’s actually the brocade-style headboard that caught our attention. It’s very decorative and looks great next to the contrasting wallpaper.

We also like the fact the bed looks homely and slept in, not totally pristine and never used.

Monochrome bedroom

Monochrome bedroom

This monochrone bedroom is characterised by the large flower canvas above the bed.
Whilst most people probably won’t have a bespoke oversized canvas going spare, it’s a good example of how effective a statement wall can be.
In fact, the effect can be easily recreated with some stunning wallpaper and the rest of the room can be left relatively simply designed.
Black walls can work

Black walls can work

Black is not a colour that everyone would automatically think to put on the wall, but this black painted wall is a classic example of just how effective it can be, if you dare to try it out.
The large decorative gold mirror works wonderfully well against the dark background; in fact, the black helps the detailing in the mirror stand out well.
Using a mirror on a black wall is also great for helping prevent a room from looking small – as black on every wall could do.

Create your own wall art

Collage sheet

Why not frame this arty collage sheet?

There are lot of lovely art works available for your walls, but if you’re feeling a bit crafty and want to create you own, then a few easy an inexpensive way would be to use collage sheets like this.

Although sold with the intention that someone making crafts could cut the images up and use them on cards, jewellery or other artwork, the sheets contain so many lovely images that they’d look great left whole and framed and put on your wall.

This one features ‘sophisticated flowers and birds,’ and the images are the size of Scrabble tiles, but there are lots more available and they can be resized if need be.

At only $2.50 from a seller on Etsy, it won’t break the bank to have a go and see what you could do with them.

It’s currently in the sale and priced at £12.74.

Bright and fun Marmite placemats

Marmite placemats

Marmite placemats

Marmite – do you love it or hate it? Depending on your preference, you’re likely to either love or hate these placemats, but we think they’re rather fun.

The set of four placemats each features a part of a Marmite jar design.

The designer has used their own sense of artistic ideas in the design, with bright colours in shades of pink, turquoise, green, red and purple that are a far cry from the usual yellow and black we associate with Marmite jars.

The set of placemats is available from the Contemporary Home for £18.99. They do matching coasters too, for £8.99 for a set of four.

The mysterious case of the noticeboard birds nest

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

If anyone happened to buy the Cox and Cox damask noticeboard that we featured recently, we wondered whether you received the birds nest with it? (The cute little one with eggs in, seen pinned on the board).

On the Cox and Cox product listing, they do specifically say that the birds nest isn’t included and was added by their product stylist, but we chanced upon the exact same product for sale elsewhere and were surprised to read that the birds nest is included.

The one with the nest is available from Lytton and Lily, described as the Marie Louise Pin Board, for £59 (so the Cox and Cox option is quite a bargain for £34!). It surely can’t be all the more expensive just because of the birds nest?!

It’s not a big deal, but it’s piqued our curiousity, so if a birds nest mysteriously appears with your Cox and Cox damask noticeboard order, please do let us know!

James May building lifesize Lego house

Lego House

Lego House

We were rather amused to read that Top Gear presenter, James May, is set to build a two storey life size house from Lego.

The house will be built in the Denbies Wine Estate in Dorking, Surrey and will include all the usual home comforts, including a full size staircase, plumbing, power, a shower and toilet.

They are still working on the logistics of a fully flushing Lego toilet, but James is hoping it’s possible, especially as he’s planning to live in the house for a few days. A massive total of three million lego bricks have already been delivered to the site for the construction of the house.

The lego house is the latest challenge James is undertaking for his BBC series, James May’s Toy Stories. Back in May, he famously built a garden entirely from plasticine for the RHS Chelsea Flower Show - and won the People’s Choice Award.
